Growing families, growing houses

The Triangle is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, and many owners would rather add on than move. Bedroom and primary-suite additions, bonus rooms over garages, and screened porches are some of the most common requests. Older close-in neighborhoods like Five Points, Hayes Barton and Oakwood in Raleigh, and Trinity Park and Old West Durham, need careful work on plaster, old wiring and historic exteriors.

Weather and trees

The Triangle's tall loblolly pines and oaks are beautiful until a storm. Hurricane Fran in 1996 and the December 2002 ice storm both caused widespread tree damage to homes. Summer thunderstorms, occasional tropical remnants and red clay that holds water around foundations shape roofing, gutter and drainage work here.

Who issues your permit

  • Raleigh: City of Raleigh Development Services. Historic districts also need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Raleigh Historic Development Commission.
  • Durham: the joint Durham City-County Inspections Department.
  • Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, Holly Springs, Morrisville: each town's own development services or inspections department.
  • Unincorporated Wake County: Wake County Permit & Inspections.
  • Chapel Hill / Carrboro: town inspections, with Orange County for unincorporated areas.

Frequently asked questions

Are you a contractor?

No. Raleigh Home Projects is a free referral service. Contractors pay us for referrals, and you hire them directly.

Does my contractor need a license?

In North Carolina, a general contractor license is required for projects of $40,000 or more. Electricians, plumbers and HVAC contractors need state licenses for any job.
